Hey guys, I know you have been waiting to get the answers about my research questions. In this post I will answer them and give you guys some more, new information. Why is Zeus so important and why is he the King of the Gods? To start off, lets talk about who Zeus was. Zeus was the son of the Titan King Cronus and Rhea. Zeus's powers consisted of being able to mimic other peoples voices perfectly, he could control all types of weather, he could shapeshift, he could turn other people into different creatures, and he could fly. There was a prophecy going around that said one of the Cronus's children would grow up to overthrow him. To stop the prophecy, Cronus declared that he was going to eat all of his children, that way none of them could overthrow him. But when Zeus came along Rhea knew that there must be a change. So instead of giving Zeus to Cronus to eat, she gave him a fake baby made out of a rock. Seeing what a bad environment that place was for Zeus, Rhea sent him to be raised by some nymphs and a goat named Amalthea.
Later on, Rhea brought Zeus back and he became the royal cupbearer. Zeus saw now he could take the upper hand. So he came up with a plan. He planned to get some poisonous wine from Metis, the Titan Goddess of wisdom, then give it to Cronus which would make him regurgitate his brothers and sisters. His plan worked and out came Hestia, Poseidon, Hades, Demeter, and Hera. Considering that these 5 Gods had just been in Cronus's stomach for decades you could assume that they could be pretty mad at their father. Zeus, like the other Gods, was not to happy about this so he banned them together to start a war with Cronus so that he would not have any power. But just having been vomited up, the Gods needed to get some weapons. So they went to free the Cyclops, and once free the Cyclops agreed to make weapons for the war. This is when Zeus received his main weapon, the lighting bolt. Once everybody had their weapons the bloody war started.
Now this is where my question about the big three comes into play. Hades, Poseidon, and Zeus had Cronus cornered. Hades turned invisible to distract him, then Poseidon blasted him with a blow from his trident, then Zeus stepped up and finished him off with his lightning bolts. Poseidon, Hades, and Zeus were true brothers and because they had done the most important job of killing Cronus they earned the spot as the three most important Gods. But Poseidon, Hades, and Zeus still did not know how to split their importance. What I mean by that is the Gods did not know who should get which important realm. They drew lots to settle this, which means they basically pulled sticks from a cup. Poseidon got the sea, rivers and lakes, Zeus got the sky, and Hades got the underworld. When Zeus got his realm, he just had to make a palace for himself. That palace was Olympus. Olympus ended up being the palace for all the other Gods, too.
why did these realms make a big impact on the Gods? Well, these realms determined the personality of each God. When Hades got his realm the underworld, he was not super excited about it. But it was the perfect fit for him. He really needed some time away from his fellow Gods. Also, Hades already had a pretty dark personality, but being king of the underworld made it darker. When Poseidon got the seas and rivers and lakes he became a bit moodier like the oceans. The sky made Zeus a tad more arrogant because the sky in his opinion is most important.
So back to Hades. Hades, like Zeus, was born from Rhea and Cronus and also got eaten and then vomited back out. What were Hades Powers? Some of Hades' powers consisted of being able to turn invisible, controlling the dead, controlling riches, making riches appear at his feet, and he could summon the dead. So as you probably know Hades was the king of the dead and the underworld. If the big three had not drawn lots, then Hades probably wouldn't have been stuck with the underworld. But the thing is even though he didn't really want that realm it worked out for him pretty well. Because of his darker personality he was not well liked among the Gods. So the underworld was a good place for Hades because he could get away from the haters. Even though he is in the underworld he is still one of the most important Gods because was one of the three who killed Cronus. Without his distraction Poseidon and Zeus would not have been able to kill Cronus.
